The Rules of Engagement in English The Rules of Engagement in English The Rules of Engagement in English By Mark Nichol In the same day, this site received, among readersââ¬â¢ responses to my recent post Courtesy Titles and Honorifics, two diverse email messages: One was a reasonable, well-written support of the writerââ¬â¢s opinion that, as she was taught, because the courtesy title Ms. is an artificial designation that doesnââ¬â¢t abbreviate anything, it should not include a period. The other correspondent wrote, ââ¬Å"hey watch out your website looks like a rule book, and we all know rule books are fascist.â⬠Whether oneââ¬â¢s convictions are adept or absurd, however, one must accept the incontrovertible fact that although one is free to write in any style or manner one chooses, this choice has consequences. Linguistic anarchy is inimical to language, by virtue of the fact that language, as a form of communication, is essential to family, to society, to civilization. Just as abiding by rules of personal and community conduct (the latter extending in scope from the smallest village to the United Nations) helps protect the fragile coexistence of humans, adhering to guidelines for language use enable at least sizeable blocs of humanity to agree on common signals for cooperation (or conflict). Language evolves, constantly and relentlessly, but precepts and attitudes about it prevail for a time before they slowly respond to changes in usage. Therefore, for example, though one of the correspondents I referred to above is correct that the period following Ms. is not logically justified and that for that reason, early in the termââ¬â¢s life span, many writers omitted the punctuation it is now standard, for the sake of consistency, to treat Ms. the same as Mr. and Mrs. Oneââ¬â¢s gender and gender politics are irrelevant: Those are the facts, maââ¬â¢am er, ms. Do you write simply for pleasure, or to share your thoughts and ideas with a small coterie of readers? Do you self-publish, whether in print or online? Knock yourself out you are hereby granted a dispensation to write in any fashion that pleases you and anyone who chooses to read your work. You are akin to a homesteader or a survivalist, staking out your own terrain on your own terms and accepting the terms that go with those terms. But if your intent is to identify yourself as a professional writer or if your employment status is predicated on the fact that your writing is intelligible to your colleagues and perhaps even consistent with distributed guidelines certain standards apply, and your ability to adhere to those standards is inextricably linked to your professional success or survival. If thatââ¬â¢s fascist, then I proudly represent the New World Order. I donââ¬â¢t mean to get all serious on you. I respect the point about the unpunctuated Ms., and for all I know, the comment about the ââ¬Å"rule bookâ⬠may be a goof. But both comments inspire this tip: When it comes to composition, let your unfettered freak flag fly. But if you submit the flag to be unfurled atop a highly visible flagpole, expect it to be redesigned to suit that flagpole or to be refolded and respectfully returned for you to do with what you wish. Analysis of The Lamb and The Tyger by William Blake Essay -- William B
William Blake was a first generation Romantic poet. Many of his poems were critical of a society who thought themselves to be almost perfect, a society run by, not their own free will, but the use of technology. He wanted people to question what they had always done, and whether it was morally right. He did so by using varying techniques that set up clashes between ideologies and reality. His poems allow us to see into ââ¬Ëthe eternal world of the spiritââ¬â¢ and his dreams of the sacred England he had always wanted, a place undamaged by technology, a place that is peaceful and tranquil. But not all his poems reflect this. In fact, from Blakeââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËSongs of Innocence and of Experienceââ¬â¢ there are a number of poems, describing what life could be like and in reality what life is like. Two examples are ââ¬ËThe Lambââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËThe Tygerââ¬â¢. We can see he uses poetic techniques to set up such clashes. These two poems demonstrate exactly Blakeââ¬â¢s views on the ills of society, mainly referring to the industrial revolution and the impacts and consequences it brought. ââ¬ËThe Lambââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËThe Tygerââ¬â¢ are both poems written in the form of a lyric which describes the capturing of a particular moment and most importantly the mood or insight it stimulates in the poet. Blake thought that a lyric gives the freedom to tell anything and explore the emotions and ideas that some incident has created. Blake shows the original meaning of ââ¬Ëlyricââ¬â¢ by actually titling his volume ââ¬ËSongs of Innocence and of Experienceââ¬â¢. The ââ¬ËSongs of Innocenceââ¬â¢ are poems which bring out happy feelings and show the greatness in life. They represent innocence and a child - like vision, thus ââ¬ËThe Lambââ¬â¢ is about God creating a lamb who is a special and holy creature. The ââ¬ËSo... ...and ââ¬Ësymmetryââ¬â¢ do not rhyme unlike the other rhyming couplets. This is also to cause confusion and bring about s sense of unease, the same confusion Blake felt through his life and child hood when he had visions and the society around him was changing. ââ¬ËThe Tygerââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËThe Lambââ¬â¢ are two poems written along the same lines but ending up to be completely different. However both poems show the same beliefs and opinions of William Blake perfectly and emphasize what he wanted everyone to remember and the lesson he wanted everyone to learn. This was that no matter how far man gets with technological advances and no matter how far the industrial revolution takes people; it will never be able to beat down the tool of human imagination, which is by far the strongest, and natures wild spirit, found in creatures such as the ââ¬Ëfierceââ¬â¢ tyger and ââ¬Ëmeek & mildââ¬â¢ lamb.

It has been 5 years since the School of Education (SOE) tasted the sweetness of pride wearing the crown of Miss WVSU-LC. And now Miss Rita Marie Penado got it again for the SOE last September 21, 2012 when she outshined the three other competitors from the three departments/school. Miss Penado, a first timer for the pageant will represent the campus to Miss WVSU 2013 during the University Week Celebration scheduled on January 2013 at Main Campus Lapaz Iloilo City. During the local pageant, Penado received minor awards on Miss Photogenic, Most Popularity, Best in Talent, and Best in Interview. Mr. James Paren of BSED-IV escorted Miss Penado to the contest and consequently won the title of First Runner Up with special awards on Best in Talent and Mr. Popularity. Representative from the School of Technology Mr. Ricky Javana was crowned Mr. WVSU-LC 2012 with the following minor awards: Mr. Photogenic, Best in Formal Wear, and Best in Interview. Other contenders were Miss Jessa Horlador from the School of Technology, First Runner Up; Miss Beverly Lubas and Mr. Mark Anthony Espadon from the School of Criminology, Second Runner Up; and Mr. Raymond John Tiu and Miss Jerelyn Lomitillo from the School of Management, Third Runner Up. All I did was set my mind for the pageant, a little bit of practice and pray for Godââ¬â¢s guidance during the pageant. Thatââ¬â¢s all, nothing less, nothing more.â⬠ââ¬Å"Really? What do you feel when you are walking on stage?â⬠ââ¬Å"Definitely, I wasà nervous, so nervous that I couldnââ¬â¢t stand nor looked straight to the judges as well as the audiences. I imagined a crowd was looking at me. Oh My Gosh! That was my first time to join a pageant. I thought of stepping back, but never did me. The worst about it was Iââ¬â¢m not even expecting to win the crown.â⬠Rita told me with open heart. To be continued on page ..4 AGONY OF DEFEAT By: Richen Lindres and Anthea Lebanan After such tremendous victory winning the cheerdance competition it is surprising to say the least. Suddenly we are presented with a series of failure that stands and striking contrast for the wonderful victorious of the past two years. How instructive this if we only have the ears to listen to the message of this: ââ¬Å"the thrill of victory was so quickly replaced by the agony of defeatâ⬠. This is the story of defeat. This the story of life and something we must learn to deal within our daily walk. One minute, we can be living in victory and next is defeat. The whistle blew. It was all over. The long practices and hard game, all the running and training, all the tough and shooting, all the pasta parties and toilet papering, everything. Over, ended, done. Why? Because the whistle had blown.as one team run off the field for joy and excitement, the other walked off in utter disappointment . as one side cheered, the other cried. The opposing team had left, the crowds had cleared, but our team just sat at our bench, looking, staring, and glaring at the empty field; mud patches and torn up grass everywhere. Poster everywhere, some hug high on the windows and some still sturdy on walls while others hung by a thread , others were just thrown to the ground by one-lookers and still more hung on fences wishing, wanting, hoping, for nothing but for the best of the team. Everyone stood, sat, laid looking at the field in amazing filled with disappointment, anger and sadness all the same time, trying to comprehend how everything they had worked so hard for had come to an end so quickly. Put to an end by the blow of the whistle. Thinking back to all the perfect opportunities..missed, all the unlucky touches or unconnected passed wondering what would have happenedà if one thing had been done differently. Tears, hugs, words, it was all enough; it all meant nothing. It wasnââ¬â¢t supposed to end like this, and yet, with the final whistle, it did. Everyone now is experiencing the agony of defeat. Some days when they are sitting in class, staring out the window, at the field, they remember, they wonder, they wish, they push it out of their minds, still experiencing the agony of defeat. Despite of the rain and muddy field, Eagles (School of Criminology) made it to the top when they smashed down the Torches (School of Education) during the championship game of football women last September 15, 2012. The Eagles beat down the torches with the score of 1-0 on the first half. Another ball was made to goal on the second half score of Eagles. The game ended with the tally of 2-0. Lions Roared and Crushed the Eagles By: Harold Quimba and April Lasangre On the hotness of the game, the management lions made it to the champ and whitewashed the Criminology Eagles during the University Hinampang, championship game Volleyball boys held September 15,2012. The ball spin and hit down the players of the Eagles as the Lions made the crushing spikes onà the first quarter. Another winning score had made the game hotter as they tally tie on the middle of the game. The last quarter had ended scored to the lions-23-25. Experience of an aspiring teacherâ⬠¦ By: Mhay L. Lauron Ambition is part and parcel of everyoneââ¬â¢s life. It serves as a guiding star that lights our way to triumph. I never expected to be future teacher someday, but as time passes by, the feeling of being a future educator someday had eventually embraced meâ⬠¦ I grew up in a poor family, my father was a farmer and we are 10 in the family. I know the situation that we have during that time. I was the youngest but still the faith that I have in my heart is to help my parents in return of their sacrifices that they had. It is the farthest school which is 12- 14 kilometers walking distance from our house. For me this was only a start of my life. The next level of my life in school was totally a great sacrifice. It is now my college life. There are times in that I am about to cry because the boredom and longing for my family. I had to be strong and forget the loneliness; instead I focused on my studies. As an aspiring teacher, I worked hard for it. All my pains and sacrifices resulted in a reward. This is now the time that 6months from now I am about to graduate in this university. West Visayas State University- Lambunao Campus. I guess thereââ¬â¢s always a first time for everything no matter how old we are. For the last semester a series of ââ¬Å"Firstâ⬠followed: * This was my first to handle a class with heterogeneous pupils. * First time to experience a pupil that urinated and eliminated his waste while the class was going on. * First time to have a pupil who goes home in tears without any reason at all. * Lastly , I had for the first time a parent scolded me for making her child upset because I scolded him for being absent in my class and teasing his other classmates to make noise inside the classroom. Based on my own experiences, I learned a lot of things after the OJT and it really transforms me to a new creature. Well I guess this was the most essential part of being an aspiring teacher. To exploreà and to adjust what is going on in our new environment. That is a specialty of a teacher that no one could ever had. Lastly, I would say that poverty is not an obstacle to higher education but a mere challenge to fight for a professional survival and achieve your dreams in your most noble way

Milan Faylu is the CEO and founder of Eben Naturals, a skin care brand based in Miami, FL. He was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, however due to his family business he grew up in 7 different countries around the world and later attended University of Miami for his college education. This provided him with a globalized view towards business opportunities. He was enrolled at the University of Miami, when his idea for his venture first came about. During trip back home to the Congo, Milan noticed the widespread use of skin lightening products by misguided consumers who had no information whatsoever about their harmful effects. Most of them even feature a high dosage of hydroquinone, a product said to be carcinogenic by the FDA. He thought itââ¬â¢d be great to promote products that would encourage people to embrace their natural skin tone, instead of the alternative harmful skin lightening products. Subsequently, when he returned to the U.S, he started to pay more attention to the beauty industry and realized that there was a serious lack of beauty solutions geared towards his demographic. He confirmed this later on with extensive market research, and combined with the passion he had towards the subject, he decided to dive in the project.
